Biographie

Olympic, World and European champion in GR, successful national head coach, actual president of the Hungarian Wrestling Federation, Csaba Hegedüs is a distinguished personality of the Hungarian wrestling sport.

At the 1970 Championnat du Monde in Edmonton a young Soviet wrestler Anatoli Nazarenko

became world champion in GR 82 kg by topping the previous year’s winner Petar Krumov of Bulgaria. One year later in Sofia a new young contender from Hungary, Csaba Hegedüs

defeated all his opponents by fall and could match for the title with Nazarenko. A new stage of development is when there are two athletes in the same category and both represent modern, fast and attractive wrestling. The Sofia duel was won by Hegedüs who pinned also Nazarenko.

Next year’s Munich Jeux Olympiques started the way the Sofia Championships ended as the two champions already met in the first round with Hungarian win again. The victory was by points just as all his later wins en route to the 100th Hungarian Olympic gold medal.

Born in 1948 Csaba Hegedüs was a universal wrestler already at an early age, able to perform

brilliant wins by fall but hold on 3x3 minute hard battles as well. He inherited his inclination towards sport from his father, teacher of physical education and fencing coach. He tried himself in fencing and obtained good results in swimming, athletics and basketball too. This versatile variety of movements was built into his wrestling style, physical endurance, explosiveness capped by his legendary power of mind.

Six months after Munich at spring 1973 he had a terrible car crash that left him in serious conditions for weeks. His comeback took place after two years with a superb win in Leningrad in 1976 followed by another European title in 1977 in Bursa in 90 kg.

At 30 he was nominated national head coach of the Hungarian National Squad and he created school in this field too. Not only he brought revolutionary changes in the preparations but also had the ability to transplant his own fanatism into his athletes. At his first world championships in San Diego 1979 Hungarian wrestlers took an unprecedented score of 4 gold medals, the most successful performance ever. During his 10-year tenure his wrestlers obtained 83 medals at major championships of which 24 golds. As sports diplomat, he began in 1977 as technical instructor. He was instructor on referee's clinics, and organized training camps throughout the world: Norway, Canada, Italy, Japan, Korea.

Doctor of law Csaba Hegedüs has been playing leading role in the leadership of Hungarian wrestling sport since 1989 elected first as vice-president and president in 1992 while today he is already member of the FILA Bureau. Remarkable person also as a leader he proved to be an excellent organizer and true master of wrestling’s marketing. He established a wrestling school -it was named after him, Mr. Tus wrestling school- 4 years ago and more than half hundred students prepare for their sport carrier in each year. He has also collected a young and dynamic team around himself including two of his 1986 World Champion wrestlers, Tamás Gáspár, director of the federation and Tibor Komáromi head coach of the GR team.

Member of the Hungarian Olympic Committee for over two decades, president of the Club of  the Best Hungarian Athletes of All Times. Married for 30 years and father of 3 children, he is now facing the big challenge of organizing the 2005 World Wrestling Championships in Budapest on September 25-October 2.
