Biographie

Retired member of Fila / Historian

Prof. Rayko Petrov was born on 26 July 2023 in Slivovitsa, Veliko Tarnovo region, Bulgaria. He started dealing with wrestling and athletics at a very young age. After a serious injury, he ceased his sports career. At the age of 24 he was nominated a national coach of the National free style wrestling team. He coached the first Olympic and World champions of Bulgarian sports and more than 40 athletes at a world level. He has worked as a coach for 15 years and 21 years as a Chairman of the Bulgarian Wrestling Federation. During his chairmanship Bulgarian wrestlers have won 997 medals from Jeux Olympiques, World and Championnat d'Europe for men, espoirs and juniors.

Prof. Rayko Petrov was elected and has worked as a Rector of the National Sports Academy, as a Vice-Chairman of the Bulgarian Union for Physical Culture and Sports, as a Director of the Scientific-Research Center, he was a Member of the Bulgarian Olympic Committee, member of the Executive Committee of the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education; as well as at other national and international institutions.

In 1978, Prof. Rayko Petrov was nominated as a FILA Bureau member. Many years he has worked as a vice-chairman of FILA and President of the Technical Commission, Coach’s Commission, Scientific Commission, Director of the High FILA Wrestling Coach’s School, etc. He has conducted a lot of theoretical and practical activities with coaches from Italy, USA, Poland, Rumania, Yugoslavia, Greece, GDR, Mongolia, Iran, etc. As a coach and public figure he has participated in 12 Summer Jeux Olympiques.

He is author of 350 scientific publications and 67 books dealing with various scientific issues (theory and methodology of wrestling, pedagogy, psychology, biomechanics, sports history, Olympic issues, etc.). Many of his works have received broad international recognition and are published in English, French, German, Russian, Spanish, Arab, Italian, Persian, Rumanian, Serbian, Polish, Hebrew, Hungarian and other languages. Special place in his work is taken by some of his books issued in English and French by FILA:

  •  Lutte Libre and Greco-roman Wrestling, 1986
  • Olympic Wresting Throughout the Millennia, 1993
  • The ABC of Wrestling, 1996
  • 100 Years of Olympic Wrestling, 1997
  • The Roots of Wrestling (The Traditional Wrestling Styles), 2000.

As an international public figure, scientist, publicist, coach and judge Prof. Rayko Petrov has a significant contribution to the development of world wrestling and sports science.
